Make it short & snappy’
D – Z for doh… zero further posts in March.
Best laid plans of mice and women… life gets in the way. This is my confession.
‘Just the facts please’
- 23 letters to go

‘I’ve got a cup of tea, tell me all about it…’
My plans were so clear:
I had my letters, I knew the order.
I had assigned food ingredients and drinks to most – even the seemingly most difficult letters such as X and Z!
Surprisingly ones one might think of as easier, for example D, were surprisingly difficult (perhaps why difficult begins with a d?).
I had gone out to buy alphabetti spaghetti, alphabet cookie cutters, alphabet cake stamps, alphabet pasta shapes… I had gone character crazy!
I had even written most articles up on a particularly productive train trip from Nottingham to London.
It all started to go wrong when I tried to locate photos including of Giant African land snails from my time working in Ghana in 2008.
Then finding time to create a recipe with xanthan gum (my ‘X’).
Realising my espresso mushroom kit probably wouldn’t grow the impressive crop of mushrooms I so wanted to photograph in less than 18 days.
…Then finding out it actually has a use by date and a suspicious oozing patch on the outside indicating things were going so well inside. I think it’s gone seriously mouldy (more so than usual fungus!). I’m sure it’s not meant to look like that! What it looks like is that I need to buy a new one to actually try it out – oh dear!
Still trying desperately to delve into my deep dark dictionary to find a ‘D’ food word… yes you might think this might help, but it didn’t deliver – where were the doughnuts, the dried herbs, the dusted delicacies I had dreamed of?
The final challenge was that March has proven to be particularly busy in ways I hadn’t previously envisioned with many exciting work opportunities, family events, holidays and generally fun things on the agenda.
You might say it went wrong because I hadn’t written them up in advance as per my genius plan after a hectic 2015 alphabet challenge, but where’s the spontaneity in that?
Although disappointed I didn’t achieve this particular challenge, I’m pleased with what else I did conquer and experience in its place: connections with people face to face and memories created to feature in future posts.
Instead, I have extended it to cover all of our deliciously dippy Spring to give greater delight in each letter’s discovery.
It has given me great respect for those who do maintain a steady rhythm of 1-2 posts per week, whatever their other time commitments are.
I vow I will complete my A-Z food ingredient list, just with a little less urgency. I will treasure each memory and capture each thought to look back on, which is one of the purposes of this blog: to enjoy life to the full – not to feel guilty for putting unnecessary pressure on myself.
